Avocado-jello mold fountains, overtures of juvenile hurt

We are at the mall. . I keep telling Hale that I can’t stop thinking about her. I keep telling Hale that she is smart and intelligent and she is everything I have ever wanted in a human being.
We are next to the avocado blue-jello mold fountain.

"You said she was suppose to meet you here?"

I nod. I tell Hale yes.

"She was hanging out with her speech friend tonight but she said she would meet me at the fountain at 6:30."

Hale looks at his watch even though he isn't wearing a watch.

"Looks like she's late."

We walk up to the payphone.

Hale asks me what am I waiting for. He tells me call her, Whinestein.

I alight the receiver to the phone punching in the numerical squares constituting Dawn’s digits.  She picks up after the second ring. I have not seen her since subway and Patrick almost ten days ago. It has been three weeks since somehow we kissed. I haven't spoken with her since the night I ran home from Tina's in my underwear.

School starts in less than a week.

One of Dawn's twin brother's picks up the phone. I try to be witty. When I ask if his sister is home or if she is in Heaven he doesn't respond. When I ask if I can speak with Dawn he yells out her name.

Tentatively we made plans for this week. Tentatively she said she would meet me  here after hanging out with Quinn.

Her voice seems tired. She doesn't seem enthused.

"I thought we were meeting tonight. I've been waiting for you."

I try to act solicitous. I try to be concerned. Dawn doesn't apologize for forgetting. She said she was taking a nap.

"I'm just right over at the mall It's only five minutes away. I really want to see you. It's been too long."

There is a pause.

"Okay Dave. I'll be over in about fifteen minutes."

I hang up the phone and smile.

Dawn arrives. She is wearing a a jerga. We hug only it is  awkward. When I tell her that I have missed her she looks at me as if to say why. I want to pull her aside. Somehow I thought we were dating. Somehow I thought when we kissed on my front porch it meant something.

She asks me if I am here by myself. I tell her I am here with Hale but he wandered off probably to go play video games. Dawn says that one of her brothers is here but he's probably in the music store.

"I'm looking for to meeting him. It will be an honor to meet another member of your family."

Dawn just sort of looks back and me and offers a listless shrug.
We do a loop. The mall is having some sort of raffle to give away diminutive racing yachts.  The boats are stationed in the jello-mold water fountains.  The last time we were in the mall we were intermittently holding hands. The last time we were in the mall our hips seem to inadvertently brush into the other every third and a half step.

I didn’t cheat on Dawn. I think to myself. I was only seminally naked with a trashy blond-haired who wreathed the lower hemisphere of her body around my diploma- scrolled stiff torso.

I didn’t cheat on Dawn

Dawn asks me so, did your friend Patrick get psychiatric help yet or is he still intellectually torchering the female race as we know it.  I pretend not to hear her. We walk  into the neon den of JR music.

“So, you listening to any cool bands these days?’

Dawn says that she’s still listening to a lot of  Concrete Blonde and Velvet Femmes  and the Feelies. She tells me that she still blasts the Jesus Christ Superstar original Broadway recording every time she showers.

When she says the word shower I think of Tina in her underwear all wet. Her hair slicked back, sleeked down the back of her neck. When I ask Dawn about the Freddie Mercury CD she tells me that she let a friend borrow it. Somehow I know the friend is her purported mentor whose name starts with a cue.

“Oh, and I’m listening to a lot of skate board music.”

“Skateboard music?”

“Yeah, a lot of these bands are from Seattle. Mudhoney and Temple of the Dog and Mother Love Bone and Pearl Jam. A lot of people define their music as Grunge but I call it Skate board music because that’s what it sounds like—thrashing around in an empty concrete pool with a skateboard and then screaming.”

I want to ask Dawn about the status of our relationship. I want to ask her if she thinks we are really a bona fide couple or is she is just some sort of senior buddy.

I tell Dawn its really god to see her. She smiles. Do you want a Mt Dew? Last time we were here you had like 20."

Dawn looks down and blushes.

"Actually I'm dehydrated. We went to Detweiller park and I got drunk last night."

"Drunk?" I say, as if someone has taken a dump in the Keatsian urn where the image of my unvarnished bride of my dream girl awaits."

"Yeah, I normally don't drink but Quinn was able to procure a bottle of Vodka and we kept doing shots and mixing it with Cranberry juice. Soon we were falling down."

Dawn tells me that she threw up after six shots and she never throws up.

She walks ahead in the music store looking for her brother.

I want implode every time she says the word Quinn.
"He's not here. He must be at the music store upstairs."

We do another loop, past the green felt-hatted Mall Mounty who looks like he is trying to tell us to eat our vegetables or warning us that we are the only ones can prevent forest fires. There are chasms of silent between us. Dawn seems like she is irritated. Like she doesn't want to hold my hand.

I try to refrain from entering the bookstore where Patrick stole the Playboy and Montgomery Wards where he jacked a pair of sunglasses.
“Hey, I was wondering, since summer is dwindling and everything and school is coming up maybe next week we can pick up Betsy and take her out to Chuck E. Cheese or something.”

“Betsy?”

“Yeah, lil’ Betsy, your friend Dawn’s sister. She’s adorable. I really miss hanging out with her. I was thinking that maybe next week before school gets underway we could take her out. Just the three of us. Kind of a farewell to summer. What do you say?”

Dawn looks at me and says the word uh.

“It’s okay, I know her sister doesn’t like me.  You could offer to babysit Betsy cause I know you used to back in the day.  It’ll be fun.”

Dawn is still looking at me like she is constipated. I ask her what’s wrong. She tells me oh you haven’t heard.

“The Dawns and I aren’t exactly on speaking terms.”

I say what, She says Betsy’s older sister Dawn and her other friend Dawn, the three Dawn's, the alternative 80's girl troika to Heathers intellectually pontificating their glory throughout the hallowed halls of Richwoods high school are no more."

“Yeah, we’re not talking.”

“Ever?” I inquire.

“Yeah, I don’t think either of them want to talk with me ever again.”

I try to be solicitous. I try to be comforting. I ask her if she is oaky. I ask her is she wants to  talk about it. Dawn sounds almost like a jean-jacket jelly shoes denim girl when she says both Dawns are royally bitches.

I think about Patrick’s RSUB but refrain from stating or elucidating the acronym.

“What happen?”

“We were all at Lums on Knoxville the other night which is like our late-night hangouts and I ask Dawn if its okay if I invite Quinn, and she says it all good so Quinn and I show up and Quinn is a Republican.”

“Quinn’s a Republican?” I say, almost in shock, knowing Dawn plans on casting her vote for Clinton.

“I mean, he’s a really cool Republican.”

Dawn states that both Quinn and herself harbor different political beliefs but that they both respect each others opinion and individual perspective. I nod.

I am beginning to wonder if Quinn has testicles.
“Anyway we start talking about current invents and about Abortion and Dawn says that she feels her existence is more than some random incubator and Quinn just explodes and even though IO don’t agree what Quinn is conveying I admire his perspicacity.”

“Yes,” I tell Dawn, “Always admire perspicacity. Perspicacity is important.”

“And Dawn just explodes and she ends up throwing one of those taupe colored bowls that the severs always bring out for the individual packets of cream that the severs bring out when they bring out the carafes of coffee and then when she grabbed Dawn’s hand and was like, ‘Come on, we are out of here. Fuck this bigot’ and we haven’t talked since.”

I feel like asking dawn who she thinks is more important, her friendship with the Dawns is more significant than her friendship with Quinn.

“ I get into tiffs all the time with my guy-friends only we rectify them in a couple of days.”

“Who Hale? “

Dawn adds that Hale is one of the coolest human beings she has ever met.

“No, Hale and I never fight. But like with Pat and Tim. And sometimes Best. We’re at each others throats all the time.”

“You rectify things with Patrick?”

“Yes. No. I mean, we may have different views of things but there’s a stratosphere of friendship and dare I say it love that somehow endures.”

I tell Dawn he’s my brother.

“I mean, why don’t you call her and say that you want to hang out with Betsy. I know it would mean a lot to her.”

Dawn says hell no. She tells me that she loves Betsy too but that her sister is a bitch.

“Hey,” I say, trying to assuage her anger.

“Maybe you can think about it. You know. Just call Dawn up and say that the you want to hang our with her third-grade sister and maybe dawn sill see that you are sincere and everything will work out.”

“I never want to see that bitch again.”

Dawn says referring to her best friend.

I nod. We walk towards the music store. Dawn points at her brother.

"If you want to meet my brother he is right over there."

                                                                                 ***

Dawn's brother has blonde hair the same color of Dawn that is kind of a mullet. He is flipping through a bunch of newly released metal CD.s

"That's him," Dawn says, alluding to him as the Little Terror. I tell him I'm gonna go inside and mess with him.

Dawn remains outside the store as I walk in. It seems like she is embarrassed to be seen with me.

I wonder why she has not answered my calls in the last week since we kissed.

I wonder if she knows about Tina showing me her cleavage.

I wonder if she knows that I got mad at Tina for saying the word Nigger.

When I find her brother he is holding up the latest Megadeath CD.  I try to make small talk with him. I ask him what he is looking for. He ignores me.

He has no clue who I am. He is one of the purported twins

"I hear Megadeath is a really cool band. My friend bought that album last week and he got laid the minute he put it on. They say its the perfect music to mosh to."

He ignores me. I hold out my hand like I am an overtly friendly usher welcoming him to a new church.

"Hi. I'm Dave. I'm a good friend of your sister. We've been hanging out all summer. She really is a beautiful person. I'm really blessed to have her in my life."

Her brother looks confused. His eyes are the color of beet sauce.

"Your sister Dawn. I'm David. I'm sure she's perhaps mentioned me?"

Dawn's brother says the word dawn like he is baked on shrooms and looking at the sunrise for the first time.

"Yeah, Dawn, your older sister. She's a really beautiful person."

There is a pause.

"Dude, are you that guy who got her drunk last night?"

He is thinking I am Quinn. I tell him no. I tell him my name is David and we met doing Community theater.

He still looks at me as if he has no clue.

"Wait, yer that dude who is always calling asking if his little mermaid or angel or whatever is there."

I tell him guilty.

"That's like really weird."

I nod. I look out the window. Dawn is nowhere to be seen.

I tell Dawn's brother that it is really nice meeting him.

I tell him again that Megadeath is a really cool band.

"By the way,my brother thinks you are like really weird." Dawn Michelle will tell me on a phone call a week later The way you just came up to him when he was in the music store. The way you asked for an angel when he answered the phone. Normal people don't do that. He thinks you are really weird."

We leave the music store. Dawn asks me in a rather rhetoric fashion why I feel the need to be effusive. When we arrive back to the fountains Hale is waiting. Dawn seems more intent on talking with David Hale. Hale is saying that it is good to see her again.

Somehow the topic on how much of a misogynists Patrick is has come up and somehow the two of them are laughing. Dawn comments aloud what is up with all these boats. I say I thought they used to dock only on land. Hale starts re-enacting scenes from  Gilligan's Island where Skipper is hitting his hat over Gilligan's head while addressing him as little buddy.

Dawn Michelle is in stitches.

Hale looks at the boats, tilts his head, and ponders aloud what it would be like to have sex on one of them before making little squeaky hi-pitched e-he-e-heee-e-heee sounds

Dawn is laughing hysterically.

“David Hale is relaying more embarrassing stories about Patrick which is apparently cracking Dawn up to no end.

When I give her a little shoulder massage  Dawn closes her eyes and looks up and tells me that feels nice before eliciting a caveat about excessive PDA .

The mall is closing. Dawn says that she is going to meet her brother at the car. I tell her it was really good seeing her again.

She smiles back at me without saying a word.

I don’t know where thinks have gone wrong with Dawn

We don’t even hug when we say goodbye.

                                                                           ***

After Dawn leaves Hale and I adjourn to Aladdin's where we empty the remainder of our spare change into a quick game of Street Fighter two.

Again Hale just won’t shut up about how cool Dawn is.

“See, she is a really nice lady. I really enjoy our intellectual discourses.”

“Hell Dave, to tell you the truth,. If things to work out with Dawn I wouldn’t mind asking her out. I feel that we have a lot of things in common.”

I tell him good. I am on fire. I am  pecking the keyboard as if waiting for something to hatch. Blood is oozing off of Hale’s avatar.  Hale says calm down my friend.

I jump kick. I perform a a half-twirl. Flecks of animated blood is spurted in every direction.

The machine turns off.

The manager gives us a scowl. The arcade is closing.

It is time to go

As we depart I can't stop looking at the random boat it the fountain.  The boat that is going nowhere. The boat that Dawn fell down laughing at as soon as Hale made a witticism. It looks like a cast away in the avocado green jello fountain amidst stale confetti of loose change.
I have just said goodbye to the woman I thought was my girlfriend without giving her a hug.
School begins in less than a week.
I wonder where I went wrong.

Tina...

That night I go back and knock on the door finding Tina and her friend Celeste seated on the couch passing a chrome hyphen between them.I will sit down and they will ruffle my hair. They will say that Marge is working seconds and she normally stops at the Bar after work so she won’t be home until around midnight.

When I walk in the door Tina immediately staples her arms around me. She shouts out mt name. She tells me she is happy to see me.

"It was a crazy day, we got on our bikes and road all the way out to Glen Oak park. Then we only stayed there for a couple of minutes and we dared each other to ride out to the mal.”

Tina is like that is crazy. I tell her yeah.

“It was nuts because my buddy Patrick just, and I mean just, got this new twelve speed and by the time we left the mall it got a flat.  Then we patched it up and it somehow got another flat.”

Tina is giggling.

“Well if you rode all the way out to Northwood’s Mall your shoulders must be really sore.” Tina says. She straddles the back of the couch. The next thing I know I feel her finger tips deeply massaging the stump of my neck.

I tell Celeste that I like her name. She offers me the hitter.

“What is it?” I tell them I don’t smoke.

Both Tina and Celeste begin to laugh.

“It’s Chronic, man.”

They are laughing again. They seem to notarize a thumbsize fleck of mold into their pipe but holding it up to lips in snorkel fashion.

She then passes the hitter in my direction even though I don't smoke.

“Don’t worry,” Tina says, “This will relax you. This will all be good.”

Dawn and I talk once after Subway.  I tell her about the crazy travels. I tell her about the bicycle sojourn I had with Pat and Tim, Tim, who went to Washington gifted with dawn. Tim who makes sounds like a dog when he gets excited due to an disproportioned Ritalin dosage.

She tells me about Quinn. She tells me about how she is writing poems. She tells me about how she is working on what she describes as a narrative piece.

For some reason I think Dawn and I are somehow together. For some reason I think we have this bond.

I refuse to mention that I have been hanging out with Tina in front of Dawn. Tina with her cleavage. Tina who told me that she can’t stand reading. Tina who smokes weed all day lounges next to the pool. Tina who doesn’t think about her future.  Tina who goes to Central even though she lives in my school district.

"Listen, I was just wondering, I know this sounds crazy, but  I just wanted to know, what are we?" Dawn repeats the latter half of the sentence back into my direction as if perplexed.

"We're human beings here for only a finite and terse period of time."

                                                                       ***

There is a rattle at the door. It is pushed open. Earl enters. He is wearing a variegated shirt with long sleeves that looks like a cheetah dry humping the sun.
The moment he enters celeste pop up and front the couch and flied over to him shouting out his name. She jumps in the air and

Earl sets Celeste down. He comes over and gives Tina a long hug.

“Dave, right,: He says, jutting his hand out in my direction as if he is campaigning for office.

“Nice to see you again,”

Earl looks at the chrome hitter on the couch, says something like I told you girls to quit doing that shit, which spawns laughs. I like Earl. He has a flat top. He is gregarious and articulate. I wonder shy Tina kept dropping the N-bomb the other night when Earl is African American. I wonder if she says that word around Earl.

Earl says something about wanting to go for a quick dip and we head our back towards the pool.

Celeste is wearing denim bibs. Tina is wearing red shorts and a vintage white t-shirt that has Ms Pacman smoking a cigarette while talking about being on the rag.
“Aren’t you girls going to go inside and slip into your bathing suits.” I inquire, rather innocuously.
Celeste begins to laugh.
“No Dave, this how we do it bro.”
Before I know it Earl is propping off his shirt like he is superman. In one swipe he lower both his short and his boxers.  He is completely naked, his unit dangling from his waist like a scepter. As if choreographed both of the girls let out a scream in unison.  I try not to look. Earl is huge. It is as if his penis were an anatomical pendulum dripping just above the caps of his knees.

Earl takes off running.

Celeste lets out a shierk the moment Earl's naked flesh cannonballs into the water.  Before I realize what is happening Celeste has unbuttoned the top of her bibs.  The outfit skids down the white stalks of her legs as if it is wounded.  Her arms cross and form an X near her waist as she reels the drape of her white top up. Both her bra and panties are an off-shade of pink.  Just when I think she is going to get completely naked she runs towards the pool performing a half-swan dive as she hang glides in to the pool.

Earl immediately begins to swipe his arm and splash her. They then begin splashing each other, water dancing in front of us,
To my left Tina already has her shirt off. She has stepped out of her sandals as if preparing to step on a scale.  Her bra is a shock of white, a suspension bridge over the lithe curves of her body.

She is pinching the copper orb in the center of her jeans. She is stepping out of her clothes when she swivels in my direction.

“Join us,” Tina says, with an unassuming smile.

                                                                       ***

“Yeah, your friend Patrick,” Dawn notes again, on the phone  I say what’s wrong with him.

“He really seems like he has issues.”

I tell Dawn that Patrick is my best friend.  That he has always been there for me. That we have always been there for each other. I want to ask Dawn our relationship seemed like it was magical when we were  conversing back stage or traipsing around the mall holding hands. I want to tell Dawn that our relationship seemed like it was serialized in after-school  televised specials with a soundtrack by Depeche Mode and the Cure and all the other new wave bands I have never heard of before. That somewhere there is an audience squinting at us on the antipodal concavity of the lens cheering that we get together,  imploring that everything works outs.

I want to tell Dawn that I’m a little scared entering manual and that if it weren’t for Cross-country and Patrick and in a way even Tim I don’t know what I’d do.

"He's messed up. His trenchant mouth is going to get him in trouble one of these days and he's gonna spout off to the wring person and get slapped."

"He's a good guy." I tell Dawn once again.

"Yeah, for a socially-convoluted misogynist." is all she says.

                                                                            ***

We are all splashing each other. We are mostly naked. For a moment we are one. For a moment it seems like this is the apex of this summer, these strangers who get stones and strip and go swimming, these strangers who know absolutely nothing about me yet who have accepted me for who I am.

Celeste pushes Earl to the opposite corner of the pool.

Tina is completely wet.  Her hair is slicked back. She is in her underwear. She seems to be floating up and down as if there is somehow  subtle surf in this lima bean shaped pool.

My torso is stiff. I am clad only in my boxers which are sticking to my thighs. Tina is smiling,

“Come here,” Tina says. She smells just like Andrea. She smells just like chlorine. We are floating together by ourselves, in the southern corner.

Something is happening behind me. In the staccato blur of my vision I see Earl in the corner rattling his tors. Celeste is still making high-pitched sounds as if she is being voluntarily violated.

“Don’t look at them,” She says, Tina has her arms, wet,  buckled around my neck.

Her body feels like nothing I have ever felt before.

Tina has her limbs wreathed around my torso. I am stiff. Both of her hand are around  my neck occluding my sight. She is drilling her body into mine. At first it feels like we are trying to float together as one.

She is rattling her torso. It feels like she is playing hop scotch on my wet thigh. She looks at me.  I can tell by the way there is a seminally gravid pause in her conversation that she wants to kiss. Something is happening on the opposite end of the pool.  Earl is making cannon grunting sounds and Celeste is bartering the back the same sound only at a higher pitch as if they are playing a game of tennis between octaves.

I lean forward to kiss Tina. I am thinking of Dawn Michelle.

I tell her listen. She tells me yeah, I know.
"So you’re a virgin,” Tina says, casually, stating that it’s no big deal, telling me to focus on the albino width of her forehead. And not on the periodic grunts of background. Celeste emitting high-pitched hiccups. In four –four time.
Somehow I can’t help but think that I am, cheating on Dawn. Somehow when my lips bend to kiss her all I taste is the dry resin from the chronic she was previously smoking.  Somehow all my ears are registering is the 4/4 time hiccupping of Celeste on the opposite corner of the pool. Somehow I wasn’t this kiss to be different, I want it to mean something.

“Hey, I know you want to kiss, but it’s like, there’s this person named Dawn. She’s about your age. Actually she’s a senior at Richwood's.”

Tina inquires if she is my girlfriend or something.

“That’s just the thing. We were like really close. I was in this play earlier this summer only I was the antagonist and I was really smitten over this one girl, Anastasia, and the next thing I know I just can’t stop talking with this make-up lady and we really hit it off.”

Tina looks back at me.

“So, you have a girlfriend.” We continue bobbing up like a buoy with genitals. Celeste is making sounds like she is in labor. I try not to think what they are doing.

I try not to think what could happen to me.

“That’s just the thing. I’m not really sure I know what we are. I really want to kiss you only part of me feels that I would be cheating on Dawn Michelle if I did.

Tina says Dawn Michelle. I tell her that’s her name.
Tina has demure eyes the color of Neptune. Her limbs press into my body.
Her hair is slicked back. Her brow is the size of an IMAX movie screen.
The center of my body is sprouting. It feels like an odalisque.  I am almost paralyzed.
I can see Tina’s rose-petal nipples through the top of her bra. Behind us Earl and  Celeste continue making noises that sounds like someone is trying to stick an oversized foot into a very wet athletic shoe.
Tina plants one finger on my lip as if telling me to shhhh.
Tina then tells me to fuck her.
I swear she calls me Charlie.
She says fuck me, Charlie.

“Maybe we can meet sometime next week and just chill like old times. You can read to me your poems."

Dawn says that she is supposed to meet Quinn for coffee next week.
“Well then after you meet Quinn for coffee. Maybe we can just go out and you can pick me up and we can go back to the mall and walk around or maybe we can go to the park and just hang out.”

I almost feel like begging. I almost feel like asking dawn why she doesn’t want to hang out with me anymore.

“Okay,” She says slowly, “Give me a call Tuesday. My class will be over after that and I would love to see you Dave.”
“Kay,” I say, excited, hanging up the phone.

I am curious I try looking back. Tina tells me not to look back.
“You don’t need to know what  they are doing. Just look at me.” There is something comforting and almost maternal in the lilt of her voice.I can see her nipple through the damp fabric of her bra. It is like they are looking back at me

Her limbs are pretzeled and lock around the body of my body.  She is tugging me close.
Somehow the only thing that occurs to me is that Tina has never seen me with my glasses on.
Her arms are wreathed around my neck.  Her breath tastes like warm Resin. Somehow our torsos are welded and have become one geometric integer, a calculus of the hidden polynomials embedded in the breath of time.  Just as we are about to kiss, the moment it feels as if our bodies are involuntary shifting in the aquatic pond of realty dual cone-shaped  dome lights flood into the driveway, skirting through the slats of the privacy fence that is the pool.
“Fuck!!!” Tina adds, aloud, stating that she must not have stopped at the bar that long.

"What?" I add, thinking it was something I was doing. From behind me I hear both Earl and Tina caroling into the chorus of fucks.

"Marge is here. She must have left the bar early."

“Fuck fuck fuck !!!!”

Tina says something about Marge probably calling the cops again if Earl is spotted on the property  Earl high tails it towards the fence door that leads to the alley. He is still naked running with a little wobble, his hands cupped over the center of his body as if trying to thwart a penalty kick. I step out into the alley still running in my boxers, running home, running the alley between Ayres and Sherman after pedaling my bike out to the mall realizing only when I reach the top of the stairs that it is locked, going back down the alley, finding my pants along with my keys and my wallet carelessly flung over the privacy fence. Earl shorts are damp. The top is sticking to the fence like a white flag. I look around. He is nowhere in sight. I leave them where they are, damp and crimp, hanging like a tassel on the edge of the fence.

When I open home my mom looks at me and asks me why I am all wet.

“I ‘ve been swimming,” I tell her.

My lips are blue. I can’t stop smiling.

I go upstairs.
For reasons I can't explain I need to talk to Dawn.
