The next day before practice Coach goes to Jose’s
locker and removes the lock opening his the sliding brow of metal with a gentle
clank.
Coach then
empties the interior contents in a milk crate. There are a pair running shoes and
several shirts with RAMS x-country listed on them. Coach does it in front of
everyone yet no one looks at coach directly in the eyes. To know surprise to everyone Hans LaGrotto is naked and looking down, as if he is ashamed of his genetic inheritance.
Jose is gone. He has not been in school in over a week.
